1980's
1985- This year would mark the beginning of many trips made south to acquire genetics. Freeway 276T of JRS was purchased from Stevenson Angus Hobson, Montana. He was used for eight years, recording 291 registered offspring. He went on to be used by Dyllan Biggs at Coronation, Alberta for an additional five years. Many cows still carry this lineage. 1985 would also mark a monumental achievement as the first offspring from cows purchased form the famed Erdman Angus Dispersal at Wetonka, South Dakota. The resulting calves would be the foundation of the Lassie & Queen Ruth cow families, which are now cornerstones of the CCA cowherd. Crescent Creek Lassie 70T was the grandmother of Crescent Creek Rito 50L, one of the foundation herd sires for the Bar- E-L Angus herd. Both the Lassie’s and Queen Ruth’s would be the foundation cow families for Wes’ herd.
1988- Another pinnacle year for CCA with the purchase of a yearling heifer from the Prairielane herd of Clayton Canning, Souris, MB. Prairielane Dusty 7034 would be the foundation “Rosebud” at Crescent Creek. Presently 65% of the cowherd carries this lineage. She was purchased in her later years as a foundation female for Danny Hollinger and still shows up in many pedigrees at Hollinger Land & Cattle.
1990's
1991- This year marked another Manitoba bred influence on our herd. Botany Max 5A was purchased at the Douglas Test Station, as one of the top performing bulls. Sired by GT Max, he would roam the pastures here for eight years, recording 286 offspring. Later he would be the foundation sire for Pretty View Stock Farm, Ivan & Phyllis Olynyk & family.
1992- Another year and more Manitoba influence. It was back to Prairielane to purchase Rito 8094 Prairielane 2060. He would be used for 5 years and most recognized for siring Crescent Creek Braveheart 35F, cornerstone sire for Sandy Bar Angus as well as Crescent Creek Rosebud 115F, one of the most recognized cows in modern day angus genetics. She was awarded premier dam at the 2009 World Angus Forum for MWC Angus. She would be the dam of Crescent Creek Main Event 6H, which was a very influential sire for Minburn Angus, and many other Western Canadian Angus herds. 2060 would be the sire of females that influenced the Remington donor program.
1995- Another influential purchase was made with a trip to the Northern Select sale at Camrose, and would prove to be very interesting, with the purchase of Dwajo Chief 92E from Dwajo Angus. The Executive 727 grandson would raise the performance bar of our herd at a time when we would be starting our on farm bull and female sale, in 1999. The offerings were well accepted by the commercial sector. “Chief” would be used for eight years and recorded 293 registered progeny. An injury was what ended his career.
1999- This year marked the first annual on farm Bull & Female sale. We have held one every year since, and 2018 marked our 20th sale held on the farm. Currently it is the first Saturday in April and with the next generation poised to join us we anticipate a continued future in the Angus industry.
2000's
2002- A trip to Sydney, Montana and the Performance Breeders Sale would net perhaps one of the most interesting purchases for our program. RR Scotchman “2999”, a grandson of the RR Scotchcap 9440 and out of a RR Lassie cow, he was a hit. This bull was used for eight years recording 387 registered progeny. His females are perhaps the most influential to date. Tom Flanagan purchased 2999 as one of the foundation sires for his Sheidaghan Anghus herd. He was used until the age of 14. Many a breeder has said they have never seen a better foot than 2999 possessed.
2002 also marked the year the Angus industry lost a great herdsman when Mike passed away from cancer on January 13, 2002. Mike’s knowledge of cattle, his smile, booming laugh and his legacy still lives on to this day, and will continue on well into the future.
2003- A home raised son of Sitz Alliance 6595 saw heavy service for five years, until an injury ended his career. In present day a son of his, Crescent Creek Alternative 516, is proving very interesting in our herd and also at Nielson Land & Cattle and Diamond T Cattle Co.
2005- Once more a trip to Sydney, Montana, to the famed GDAR herd netted the purchase of GDAR Traveller 235. He was used successfully for five years on our farm.
2008- Another home raised bull, Crescent Creek Pacesetter 16U, was added. This strong Canadian pedigree has been very successful. Out of an Alliance 29N daughter his calving ease and maternal performance has not gone unnoticed by commercial customers, and his EPD’s put him in the top 3% for birth weight and 1% for maternal calving ease. At present he is 10 years old and will see walking service again.
2011- MC McCumber 8R 101 Rito 1136, a grandson of one of the most influential bulls in the breed, RR Rito 707, was purchased from the McCumber Ranch. An established operation known to have one of the strongest cow herds in North America. His untimely death at age five proved a great loss. However many daughters and two sons carry on his strong maternal influence.
2015- The Purchase of Chapman Memento 3589 is proving very valuable to our farm. We believe this bull to be unrivaled in his maternal contribution to our cowherd, and the early signs are very exciting!
2016- The purchase of a very exciting young bull from Hinman Angus, Malta, Montana has us looking forward to a bright future. HA Outside 5161 is a paternal brother to the high selling HA Cowboy Up 5405 from that same sale. 5161 was a slick find by our late friend and cattle enthusiast Rob Holowaychuk, he always had an eye for the good ones!
Red Angus
Red Angus
Crescent Creek history would not be complete with the mention of years spent in Red Angus. 1989 would mark the first purchases of Red Angus females from Cutarm Red Angus at Gerald, Sask. 1990 saw a purchase at the Superstar Sale at Edmonton Fall Fair, and turned out to be an instrumental contribution to our Red Angus division. Red TLA Duchess 82Z. She would produce many sale toppers, one being Red Crescent Creek Duchess 3F, who would become a donor cow for Sebastian Stewart.
1991 marked the purchase of one of the best cows black or red to come to Crescent Creek, with a fall trip to Waterton Park and the famed McKenzie Red Angus sale. When the hammer fell we owned one of the best cows of the time. Red MEM Icecap Annie 22Z was truly sensational. If all breeders could own a cow like her even once, you would consider yourself lucky. In 2011 the decision to disperse the red herd was made. With growing cow numbers and dwindling family labor the red cows would be sold to help decrease the work load and the pressure of managing two herds. We enjoyed our years in the Red Angus and cherish the friends we made.
